PENANG, 30 OCTOBER 2011 – The dirty stretch of beach along Penang's famous Gurney Drive promenade became a thing of the past with the recent Gurney Drive Clean-Up, where in less than two hours, some 2,000 volunteers from 51 organisations including 30 dedicated staff of Berjaya Penang Hotel fished out 3,193kg of waste.

Among the 'good catch' fished out during the annually organized "Cleaning Gurney" Campaign were old furniture, wires, plastic bags, bottles, clothes, polystyrene containers, ropes, cigarette butts and plastic cups.

Berjaya Penang Hotel staff, clad in T-shirts bearing 3,2,1-STOP!@BHR – a recently launched brand communications campaign by Berjaya Hotels & Resorts, along with other participants were seen combing the shorelines to pick up the rubbish. They had gathered at Gurney Drive as early as 6.30am for registration, light refreshments and a briefing session before they set out at 7.30am to clean up the area.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee Chairman – Mr Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the event, said the cleanup was to inculcate awareness among the public on the importance of keeping the environment cleaner and greener.

"This is one of the many CSR projects for this year. We are working very closely with the State Government and our neighbouring community in our quest to create an environmentally preserved Penang", said Mr. Cheah Hooi Theng, General Manager of Berjaya Penang Hotel.

"Cleaning up public and tourism spots should not be the sole responsibility of the local council but a shared responsibility with the public. That is why Berjaya Penang Hotel has been a devoted supporter of this campaign since its initiation in 2008", concluded Cheah.
